Runner-up finish in World 100 prelim at Eldora Speedway
Sporting a brand-new American flag themed wrap for the 53rd annual World 100, Ricky Thornton Jr. entered his SSI Motorsports No. 20RT into battle at the famed Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio) on Thursday for a pair of prelims to kick off the three-day event.
Dividing the 102-car field into two groups, Thornton raced into Thursday’s opener with a fourth-to-second run in his heat. Moving forward again in the feature, Ricky posted a third-place finish from the third row in the 25-lapper.
For another round of preliminaries on Friday, Ricky followed up a third-place finish in his heat with a runner-up showing in his feature. He was overtaken by Brian Shirley on the final lap, marking him second in the final rundown with Chris Madden coming in third.
With a points provisional already secured, Thornton was an early exit in his heat on Saturday evening after fading outside a transfer spot. Starting the $56,000-to-win World 100 finale in 19th, Ricky rebounded with a 12th-place outing after suffering a flat right-rear tire on lap 76 while running eighth.
