Third-place finish in Sunshine Nationals opener, fourth on Saturday
Ricky Thornton Jr. made his first start of the 2024 season aboard the SSI Motorsports No. 20RT Late Model on Friday evening at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) for the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals opener after Thursday’s program fell to weather.
In a stacked field of 56 World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series entries, Thornton raced into the redraw with a heat race win. Lined up sixth for the feature, Ricky climbed three positions in the 35-lap affair to finish third, trailing Devin Moran and Brandon Sheppard.
After getting buried in time trials on Saturday, Ricky backed up an eighth-to-fifth run in his heat with a runner-up showing in his B-Main. Starting the $15,000-to-win DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals finale in 23rd, Thornton advanced through the field 19 spots to register a fourth-place finish.
